In a significant move for the software development world, Google has released Gemini Code Assist, an AI-powered coding assistant that directly competes with GitHub Copilot and Amazon CodeWhisperer. Powered by Google's Gemini LLMs (formerly Bard and PaLM), Code Assist is targeted at developers working on large-scale enterprise software, offering AI-driven code generation, debugging, and documentation assistance.
Gemini Code Assist is part of Google Cloud’s push into developer productivity tools, integrated within Google Cloud’s IDE plugins for platforms like Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, and Cloud Shell Editor.
It supports multiple languages including:
Python
Java
Go
TypeScript
Kotlin
C++
And is trained on open-source repositories, internal Google code (where permitted), and documentation to provide real-time coding suggestions and explanations.
