Anthropic Brings Claude Cowork AI Agent to Phones and Web Browsers for Always-On Work Automation

Anthropic is bringing its AI assistant further into the daily grind of workplaces with an expansion of Claude Cowork to mobile devices and web browsers, allowing users to assign tasks, track progress, and pick up projects without being tied to a desktop computer.
Previously available only for desktop applications, Claude Cowork is now evolving into a more flexible AI workspace that will work across multiple devices. The move is emblematic of a broader shift in the artificial intelligence industry away from conversational chatbots and toward autonomous AI agents that can carry out longer, multi-step tasks on behalf of users.
Anthropic’s latest update reframes Claude Cowork as a digital workplace assistant rather than a coding tool, enabling professionals to offload research, document prep, workflow management and other knowledge-based tasks.
AI Work Continues Even When Users Leave Their Devices
One of the biggest changes with the mobile and web expansion is that a user’s computer doesn’t have to remain active while tasks are running.
Now with remote sessions, even if you close the laptop, Claude can keep working in the cloud. Users can start a task on one device, watch its progress on their phone and examine completed work from a different platform.
It’s also adding background task execution and scheduled workflows, enabling users to build processes that keep running without them having to be connected to their device. Notifications can alert users when Claude requires approval or further input. The change gets AI agents closer to the idea of a digital coworker that’s always there, can work 24/7 and involve humans in key decision points.
From Coding Assistant to Workplace AI Partner
Claude Cowork first came to attention as an AI agent that could help with software development and technical tasks. But Anthropic says usage patterns show professionals are increasingly using the platform for wider work activities.
The company has expanded Cowork’s scope to include business operations, content creation, document management, research and workflow automation.
Beyond just generating code, Claude Cowork has the ability to assist users in organising information, preparing reports, analysing files, managing projects, and handling administrative tasks. The expansion represents a major shift in the AI market. Tech companies are racing to build agents that can perform entire workflows, not just answer questions.
Mobile Access Changes Users’ Interactions with AI Agents
The introduction of Claude Cowork on smartphones changes the user-AI systems relationship.
Many AI-powered productivity tools used to be attached to a workstation that had files, applications, and browser sessions. Mobile access means users can keep track of tasks, wherever they are, and take action when decisions need to be made.
For those on the road frequently or working in many locations, being able to start a task in your office and continue it on a phone could make AI agents much more useful. Anthropic’s move is part of a larger trend in the industry, with AI assistants increasingly being decoupled from specific devices and more closely tied to cloud-based workflows.
Full Claude Cowork Experience Remains on Desktop
The desktop version remains the most capable version of Claude, says Anthropic even as it expands to mobile and web platforms.
Desktop users have access to deeper integrations such as local file access, and browser capabilities that are not fully available in remote mobile sessions. That’s one of the technical challenges of getting powerful AI agents onto smaller devices, while keeping the privacy and security of the user in mind.
Mobile and web versions offer flexibility, but users with complex projects, large files, or local applications may still prefer desktop environments.
Anthropic is Targeting the Future of AI-Powered Work
The launch comes as major tech companies race to define the next generation of workplace automation.
AI companies are moving beyond standalone chat interfaces and building systems that can plan, execute and monitor tasks with minimal human intervention. Anthropic’s growing Claude Cowork goes head to head with other AI agent platforms that are trying to become indispensable workplace tools.
It’s no longer just a matter of which AI model delivers better answers. More and more it’s about which system can become the most useful digital employee for everyday work.
Anthropic Continues to Rely on Human Oversight
Anthropic continues to focus on human oversight, even as it builds out its Claude Cowork to automate complex workflows.
The system can obtain user input when human judgement is needed for decision making, and the tasks are under user control until the important actions are completed. This echoes a wider debate in the industry about autonomous AI systems. Companies are trying to push automation further while maintaining safety brakes that prevent unintended actions.
The pace at which AI agents will find their way into the workplace will likely be dictated by the tradeoff between efficiency and control for companies.
Claude Cowork Announces the Arrival of Always-On AI Assistants
Anthropic’s launch of Claude Cowork marks a big step forward in the evolution of AI-powered productivity tools.
By enabling users to delegate tasks that span devices and run in the background, the company is inching toward a future of AI assistants as ongoing collaborators rather than occasional tools. The move also demonstrates how the AI race has shifted from chatbots to autonomous systems capable of assuming real work duties.
As companies continue to build out these platforms, the next chapter of artificial intelligence may not be about who can generate the best reply, but which AI can do the most meaningful work successfully.
