Xiaomi is making a major push into the premium foldable smartphone market with the new Xiaomi 18 Fold, combining a shorter and wider design with the company's own XRing O3 AI processor. The phone was showcased publicly at IFA 2026 in Berlin before Xiaomi formally launched it in China on September 7, putting the device directly into the growing competition between Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei and Apple. The timing is especially notable as Apple is expected to unveil its own foldable iPhone, intensifying a market that has traditionally been led by Samsung and Chinese manufacturers.

The 18 Fold represents a change in Xiaomi's approach to large book-style foldables. Instead of the taller, narrower proportions commonly associated with earlier foldable phones, Xiaomi has adopted what it describes as a medium-fold design. When closed, the device has a more compact, passport-like shape, while opening it reveals a much wider display. The Verge reported that both screens use an approximately 1.4:1 aspect ratio, with a 5.38-inch outer display and a 7.58-inch inner OLED screen. That configuration is designed to make the cover display more practical for one-handed use while providing a more natural canvas for video, reading and other content when the phone is unfolded.

The design also gives Xiaomi a clear point of differentiation as manufacturers experiment with what the ideal foldable form should look like. Samsung has moved toward a wider passport-style approach with its latest Fold models, while Huawei has pushed the category in another direction with increasingly complex multi-fold devices. Xiaomi's solution sits between those extremes, offering a conventional book-style hinge while making the device wider and shorter than previous generations. In practical terms, that could make the cover screen feel more like a normal smartphone rather than a tall, narrow secondary display.

Inside the 18 Fold is arguably the phone's most important technological change: Xiaomi's in-house XRing O3 processor. The handset is the first Xiaomi flagship foldable to use the company's own high-end silicon, replacing the dependence on Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform. Xiaomi describes the XRing O3 as an AI-focused flagship processor, and CEO Lei Jun said the chip delivers stronger responsiveness than Apple's A19 Pro. Those are Xiaomi's own performance claims and will ultimately require independent testing to determine how the processor compares under sustained workloads, gaming and artificial-intelligence tasks.

The move into custom silicon is strategically significant. Smartphone makers increasingly see processors as more than components that determine raw speed. Modern chips control image processing, AI features, power efficiency, graphics performance and many of the capabilities that distinguish premium devices. Developing its own processor gives Xiaomi greater control over that technology stack and could allow the company to optimize hardware and software together. It also reduces some dependence on outside chip suppliers at a time when advanced semiconductor supply chains have become increasingly strategic for the global smartphone industry.

The XRing O3 is accompanied by Arm's Mali G2-Ultra NX GPU, which brings newer AI-assisted graphics technology to mobile gaming. The system supports graphics techniques designed to improve frame rates and image quality through technologies resembling the AI upscaling and frame-generation approaches increasingly seen on PCs. The combination suggests Xiaomi is positioning the 18 Fold as more than a productivity device, with gaming and graphics performance also becoming part of the premium foldable proposition.

Another major strength is the battery. Xiaomi has fitted the 18 Fold with a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, substantially larger than the 4,800mAh battery in Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8, according to The Verge. The phone supports 67W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Large batteries have traditionally been difficult to accommodate in thin foldables because manufacturers are balancing two displays, a hinge mechanism and multiple layers of flexible components inside a relatively compact body. Xiaomi's use of high-density silicon-carbon battery technology is therefore an important part of the phone's hardware strategy.

Display technology is another area where Xiaomi is pushing aggressively. Both OLED panels can reach a claimed peak brightness of up to 4,000 nits, potentially helping the phone remain readable in bright outdoor conditions while also improving the visual impact of HDR content. The broad internal display should also be well suited to video and digital reading, while the foldable format continues to offer a larger workspace for multitasking than a conventional smartphone. Xiaomi says the phone can run three apps side by side when opened, making the additional screen real estate more useful for productivity.

Photography is another area where Xiaomi is attempting to avoid the compromises traditionally associated with foldables. The 18 Fold features a triple rear-camera system developed with Leica, including a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera offering 3.5x optical zoom and a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, according to The Verge. That combination gives Xiaomi a significant hardware advantage over some competing foldables that reduce the number or quality of rear cameras in order to save space.

The device's physical design is equally distinctive. Xiaomi has shown the phone in a striking deep red finish alongside more conventional black and white versions, while a limited pink ceramic edition is also being produced. The phone weighs 219 grams and measures 5.02mm thick when unfolded, according to Xiaomi's launch presentation as reported by Reuters. Those figures place considerable emphasis on portability despite the large internal screen.

There are still compromises. The Verge noted that the 18 Fold is slightly thicker and heavier than Samsung's competing foldable and that Xiaomi had not announced an IP rating for the device. The visible display crease may also be more noticeable than on some rival models. Those factors matter because foldable buyers are increasingly expecting flagship-level durability in addition to flagship-level specifications. Xiaomi has emphasized its newer hinge and screen durability, but long-term reliability will ultimately depend on real-world use rather than laboratory claims.

Pricing could become one of Xiaomi's biggest advantages. Reuters reported that the Xiaomi 18 Fold starts at 10,999 yuan, approximately $1,540, and rises to 14,999 yuan, or around $2,100, depending on configuration. That positions it below Huawei's new Mate XT2 tri-fold pricing while giving buyers a premium hardware package. The phone's value proposition becomes particularly interesting when the battery, camera hardware, processor and wide displays are considered together.

However, international availability remains uncertain. The device was prominently showcased during Xiaomi's first major IFA presence, where the company displayed more than 380 products and presented its wider 'Human × Car × Home' ecosystem. Yet Xiaomi has not confirmed a broad international release for the 18 Fold, meaning its impact on Samsung and other global competitors could initially remain concentrated in China.

That limitation could prove important. China's foldable market is already highly competitive, with Huawei holding a dominant position in the second quarter of 2026, according to figures cited by Reuters. Xiaomi therefore faces strong competition at home while also attempting to establish a clearer identity in the premium segment internationally. Its custom processor could become a key differentiator if it delivers the efficiency and AI performance Xiaomi claims, particularly as smartphone manufacturers increasingly build their own silicon strategies.

The bigger story surrounding the Xiaomi 18 Fold is that foldable phones are rapidly becoming a technology battleground rather than an experimental niche. Samsung continues to dominate the global category, Huawei is pushing multi-fold designs, Xiaomi is experimenting with wider conventional foldables, and Apple is widely expected to enter the segment. At the same time, custom AI silicon is becoming as important to flagship phones as camera sensors or display technology once were.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold therefore arrives at an important moment. Its combination of a practical wide-screen design, large battery, Leica camera system and proprietary XRing O3 processor gives Xiaomi a strong technical pitch. Whether that translates into a genuinely better foldable experience will depend on software optimization, heat management, battery endurance, camera performance and long-term hinge reliability. But by bringing the phone to the global attention of IFA and then launching it in China days later, Xiaomi has made clear that it intends to compete aggressively at the very top of the foldable market.
